Psalm 31:15 says, “My times are in your hands; deliver me from the hands of my enemies, from those who pursue me.”This single verse is a wellspring of wisdom, comfort, and conviction, particularly in a world where uncertainty seems to define so much of our daily lives. When David wrote this psalm, he was not just composing poetry; he was baring his soul in the middle of great distress. And yet, in the midst of his fear, what we hear is not panic—it’s trust.

Let’s begin with that opening declaration: “My times are in your hands.” In these few words, David is acknowledging the sovereignty of God over every moment of his life. This isn’t just a poetic way to say “God is in control.” It’s a heart-level surrender. The word “times” here encompasses more than just minutes and hours. It refers to seasons, circumstances, and stages of life. David is saying, “Lord, everything about my life—my successes, my failures, my highs and lows—they all rest in Your capable hands.”

It means we know where to take our fears.

David is not being passive. He’s actively calling on God, asking Him to intervene. There’s an intimacy in this plea—a relationship that allows David to be raw and honest. He is not giving a rehearsed prayer; he is speaking directly to his Deliverer. And this kind of prayer—one that acknowledges both God’s sovereignty and our need—is a model for us. The idea of enemies may not always translate literally in modern life, but enemies can take many forms: fear, addiction, depression, anxiety, financial stress, relational wounds. All of these can pursue us, can feel like they're closing in. But like David, we are not defenseless. We have a refuge. Proverbs 18:10 says, “The name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.” Psalm 31:15 is not just a cry for help—it’s a sprint toward safety.

When we apply this verse to our lives today, it becomes both a spiritual anchor and a call to action. Spiritually, it calls us to realign our view of time, control, and sovereignty. It challenges us to release our grip on things we were never meant to carry alone. Emotionally, it invites us to live from a place of rest, not reaction. When your times are in God’s hands, you don’t have to live in constant panic when plans fall apart or when people betray you. Circumstances may surprise you, but they never surprise Him.

There’s also an eschatological tone in this verse. For the believer, all of time ultimately points forward to the return of Christ and the fulfillment of God’s eternal promises. So when we say, “My times are in your hands,” we are also saying, “My eternity is in your hands.” That is a confident declaration that extends far beyond today’s trouble—it speaks into forever.

In this way, Psalm 31:15 doesn’t just help us endure hardship—it helps us walk through it with purpose. When your life is surrendered to God, suffering is never wasted. God uses even the hard seasons to shape our character, deepen our faith, and reveal His glory. Romans 8:28 reminds us that “in all things God works for the good of those who love him.” If all things include trials, then even our enemies can become instruments of transformation in the hands of God.

Finally, this verse invites us to live a life of continual dependence. We don’t just say “my times are in your hands” once and walk away. We live in that truth daily. We wake up and say, “Lord, this day is yours.” When faced with a decision: “Lord, guide my steps.” When overwhelmed: “Lord, I trust You.” That kind of rhythm creates resilience, rooted not in ourselves, but in the God who never fails.

So whether you’re on a mountaintop or in a valley, whether your enemies are external or internal, Psalm 31:15 gives you a posture to adopt, a prayer to pray, and a promise to hold onto: Your times—your whole life—are in His loving, powerful, faithful hands. And that is the safest place they could ever be.
