Greetings,
" ... and whoever wants to be first must be your slave." ✝️

Unpacking the Message of Matthew 20:26–27
Matthew 20:26–27 presents a radical redefinition of greatness, one that stands in stark contrast to the values of the world. When Jesus says, “Not so with you,” He is drawing a clear line between the way authority and status are pursued in human systems and the way they are to be understood in His kingdom. This phrase signals a complete departure from cultural norms, inviting His followers into a different way of thinking and living.
The world often associates greatness with power, recognition, and influence. People strive to rise above others, seeking positions that bring honor and control. Jesus challenges this mindset by reversing the direction of ambition. Instead of climbing upward, He calls His followers to move downward into service. Greatness, in His kingdom, is not about being elevated but about being willing to serve.
The statement “whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant” reveals that the desire for greatness itself is not condemned. Rather, it is redirected. Jesus does not tell His followers to abandon ambition, but to redefine it. True greatness is measured not by how many people serve you, but by how many you are willing to serve.
The use of the word “servant” indicates a posture of humility and willingness. A servant prioritizes the needs of others, often without recognition or reward. This requires a shift from self-centered living to others-centered living. It is a deliberate choice to place the well-being of others above personal gain.
Jesus intensifies this teaching by adding, “whoever wants to be first must be your slave.” The term “slave” goes even further than servant, implying complete surrender of personal rights and a total commitment to serving others. This language underscores the depth of humility and sacrifice that characterizes true leadership in God’s kingdom.
This teaching is not merely theoretical; it is embodied in the life of Jesus Himself. He is the ultimate example of what He teaches. His entire ministry is marked by service, culminating in His sacrificial death. By giving His life, He demonstrates that the highest form of greatness is found in self-giving love.

Matthew 20:26–27 also addresses the issue of motivation. Serving others is not meant to be a strategy for gaining recognition or status. It is an expression of a transformed heart that reflects the character of Christ. When service is genuine, it flows from love rather than from a desire to be seen.
This passage challenges the natural human inclination toward comparison and competition. It calls believers to shift their focus from personal advancement to collective well-being. In doing so, it creates a community where relationships are marked by humility, mutual care, and respect.
The teaching also highlights the connection between leadership and service. In God’s kingdom, leadership is not about authority over others but responsibility for them. Those who lead are called to serve in a way that nurtures, protects, and uplifts those under their care.
Matthew 20:26–27 invites believers to examine their own attitudes and actions. It raises questions about how they view success, how they treat others, and what drives their decisions. It calls for a reorientation of values, where service becomes the measure of greatness.
This passage also reflects the broader theme of the kingdom of God as an upside-down kingdom. What is considered low in the world is honored in God’s eyes. This reversal challenges believers to live differently, embracing values that may not be immediately recognized or rewarded by society.
Ultimately, Matthew 20:26–27 is an invitation to follow the example of Christ. It calls believers to a life of humility, service, and sacrificial love. In doing so, it reveals that true greatness is not about position or power, but about reflecting the heart of God through serving others.

A prominent verse related to generational stewardship of money is Proverbs 13:22, which states, "A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children."
This verse suggests that part of being a good steward of wealth includes planning for the future and ensuring the well-being of future generations of kingdom builders.
This verse is often cited in discussions about financial planning and legacy, it's important to remember that the Bible also emphasizes the importance of giving to those in need and being content with what one has, rather than accumulating wealth for its own sake.
The focus should be on using resources wisely and for God's glory first and foremost, NOT simply leaving a large sum of generational money.
My mission is to serve followers of Christ through helping them become builders of His kingdom. Trading is NOT a get rich scheme, rather it's a skillset that when applied from the perspective of stewarding God's wealth and will first, proves to be incredibly fulfilling!

Matthew 20:26–27 is about how you approach people, power, and purpose every single day.
“Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant…”
Jesus is not removing the desire for greatness—He is redefining it.
If you don’t apply this, you will:
• seek recognition
• compare yourself to others
• feel overlooked or unappreciated
• measure success by position
If you do apply it, you will:
• develop humility
• build strong, meaningful relationships
• experience purpose in everyday moments
• grow into Christlike maturity
This is about how you think about yourself in relation to others.
1. Redefine what success means in your life
The world says:
“Success = being noticed, promoted, or praised.”
Jesus says:
“Success = serving others well.”
Journal Prompt:
What does “success” look like to me right now?
Application:
Rewrite your definition:
“Success is being faithful in serving others, not being seen.”
2. Notice when you expect recognition
You often don’t realize how much you want to be acknowledged.
Journal Prompt:
When do I feel frustrated because I’m not noticed or appreciated?
Application:
In that moment, choose this:
“I will serve without needing recognition.”
That’s where growth happens.
3. Catch subtle pride in everyday moments
Pride doesn’t always look obvious—it shows up in:
• needing to be right
• wanting control
• comparing yourself
Journal Prompt:
Where does pride show up in my daily interactions?
Application:
Choose humility:
• listen more
• speak less
• let others go first
4. Shift from “What do I get?” to “What can I give?”
Your mindset determines your behavior.
Journal Prompt:
When I enter a situation, what am I looking for—benefit or opportunity to serve?
Application:
Before entering conversations or tasks, ask:
“How can I serve here?”
5. Serve in ordinary, unseen moments
Most opportunities to serve are not dramatic—they’re daily.
Journal Prompt:
What small opportunities to serve did I miss today?
Application:
Look for:
• helping without being asked
• encouraging someone
• doing something inconvenient
6. Learn to serve even when it’s uncomfortable
True service often costs something.
Journal Prompt:
Where do I avoid serving because it’s inconvenient?
Application:
Choose one uncomfortable act of service this week.
Growth happens there.
7. Remove comparison from your thinking
Comparison destroys humility.
Journal Prompt:
Who am I comparing myself to right now?
Application:
Replace comparison with focus:
“My calling is to be faithful—not to compete.”
8. Let your identity come from Christ—not your role
You are not valuable because of what you do—you are valuable because of who you are in Christ.
Journal Prompt:
Do I feel more valuable when I’m recognized or when I’m aligned with God?
Application:
Remind yourself:
“My identity is not in my role—it’s in Christ.”
9. Respond differently when treated unfairly
Service doesn’t always lead to appreciation.
Journal Prompt:
How do I respond when I feel overlooked or treated unfairly?
Application:
Choose grace instead of reaction.
Jesus served even when misunderstood.
10. End each day with a “servant mindset” check
Daily Reflection:
• Where did I serve well today?
• Where did I focus on myself instead?
• What will I adjust tomorrow?
Then pray:
“Lord, shape my heart to serve like You.”
Final Truth
You don’t become great by climbing higher.
You become great by bending lower.
Matthew 20:26–27 is not about doing more.
It’s about becoming more like Christ.

Closing thoughts as we pray for those reading or hearing this verse today...
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for showing us that Your kingdom is different from the world. While the world teaches us to seek position, recognition, and power, You call us to humility, service, and love. Help us understand that true greatness is not found in being above others, but in serving them.
Lord, change our hearts. Where we seek to be noticed, teach us to serve quietly. Where we desire control, teach us to surrender. Remove pride, selfish ambition, and comparison, and replace them with humility, compassion, and a willingness to put others first.
Jesus, You are the perfect example. You came not to be served, but to serve, and You gave Your life for others. Help us follow Your example in our daily lives—at home, at work, and in every relationship. Let our actions reflect Your love, even when it costs us comfort or recognition.
Holy Spirit, guide us to see opportunities to serve. Open our eyes to the needs around us and give us the courage to respond. Teach us to value people the way You do and to find joy in lifting others up.
Father, may our lives reflect the heart of Christ. Let our pursuit of greatness be transformed into a desire to serve faithfully, love deeply, and walk humbly with You.
In the name of Jesus, Amen 🙏🏻
