Greetings,
Take Courage — You Are Never Alone
"Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you." — Deuteronomy 31:6
Unpacking the Message of Verse Deuteronomy 31:6
Deuteronomy 31:6 is a profound declaration of God’s faithfulness and a call for unwavering courage in the face of uncertainty. Spoken by Moses as he prepared the Israelites for his departure and the transition of leadership to Joshua, this verse reminds us that our strength does not come from within ourselves, but from the presence of God who goes with us.
The command to “be strong and courageous” is not based on human ability but on divine assurance. Fear and terror may be natural responses to daunting situations, but they are rendered powerless in the light of God’s unwavering presence.
The context of this verse is crucial. The Israelites stood on the threshold of the Promised Land, facing strong enemies and fortified cities. From a human perspective, their future seemed uncertain and dangerous. Yet Moses emphasized that God was not sending them alone—He was going with them. This principle applies today just as much as it did then. We all encounter battles in life—whether in relationships, careers, finances, or personal struggles—and God’s promise remains unchanged. He does not abandon His people.

The phrase “He will never leave you nor forsake you” is a recurring theme throughout Scripture. In Joshua 1:9, God reiterates this same encouragement to Joshua, who was stepping into Moses’ leadership role. Jesus echoes it in the New Testament when He assures His disciples in Matthew 28:20, “Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” The author of Hebrews 13:5 applies this truth to believers by reminding them that God’s presence is greater than any material security.
Courage is not the absence of fear; it is the refusal to be controlled by it. Fear often arises when we focus on our limitations rather than God’s power. When we rely on our strength, we will inevitably feel weak. However, when we shift our trust to God, we find confidence beyond ourselves. Paul captures this idea in 2 Corinthians 12:9-10, where he writes that God’s power is made perfect in weakness. This means that acknowledging our insufficiency allows God to work through us in ways beyond what we could imagine.
The assurance that “the Lord your God goes with you” is deeply personal. Unlike human leaders who may falter or abandon us, God’s faithfulness is unshakable. David understood this when he declared in Psalm 23:4, “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me.” God’s presence is not conditional on our performance; it is based on His character. His love and commitment to His people are unwavering.
This verse also speaks to the nature of faith. Faith is not just believing in God’s existence; it is trusting in His promises. The Israelites had seen God’s power in the past—parting the Red Sea, providing manna in the wilderness—yet they still struggled with fear. Faith requires us to remember God’s past faithfulness as we face new challenges. When we recall how He has carried us through difficulties before, we gain confidence to trust Him in the present and future.
Applying this verse to daily life means choosing courage in the face of trials. It means refusing to let fear dictate our decisions and instead stepping forward in faith, knowing that God is with us. Whether facing a major life transition, an unexpected hardship, or a season of uncertainty, this verse reminds us that we are never alone. The same God who led Israel into the Promised Land leads us through every challenge we encounter.
Ultimately, Deuteronomy 31:6 is a declaration of God’s covenant faithfulness. He does not make empty promises. He does not abandon His people when circumstances become difficult. He goes before us, walks beside us, and carries us when we are weak. Our task is to trust Him, to take steps of faith even when the path ahead is unclear. In doing so, we live out the courage that Moses commanded and experience the peace that comes from knowing God is always with us.
