The psalmist, traditionally understood to be David, begins with a personal discipline: “I keep my eyes always on the Lord.” This is not a passive awareness but an active, deliberate focus. Notice the result of God’s nearness: “I will not be shaken.” The Hebrew word used for “shaken” can be translated as “totter” or “slip.” David is saying, in effect, “I will remain firm, grounded, and secure.” This isn’t arrogance, it’s confidence rooted in the constancy of God’s presence. It’s the same conviction Paul expresses in Romans 8 when he says that nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus.

This verse speaks directly into the hearts of those who are dealing with anxiety, instability, or fear about the future. It doesn’t deny that storms come—it says that when they do, those who keep their eyes on the Lord will not collapse. The winds may howl, the waters may rise, but you will not be shaken. Think of Peter walking on water in Matthew 14. As long as his eyes were on Jesus, he did the impossible. But when he focused on the wind and the waves, he began to sink. The lesson is simple but profound: where we look determines how we stand.
