Greetings,
Living in the Freedom Christ Gave You
Paul writes, “But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life.” — Romans 6:22
Unpacking the Message of Romans 6:22
Romans 6:22 presents a profound shift in identity and purpose for every believer: “But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life.” To truly appreciate the depth of this verse, we have to slow down and unpack each phrase, because every part speaks to the core of our faith and the way we live daily.
Paul begins with the phrase “But now”, which signals a turning point. This isn’t a casual time marker — it’s a declaration of transformation. The “now” represents the believer’s present reality, contrasted with the “before” when sin was our master. There’s a before and after in the Christian life. Before Christ, we were enslaved to sin — not just in the sense that we made mistakes, but in that our very nature was inclined toward rebellion against God. But the “now” is defined by a break from that old identity, because of the work Christ has done in us.
The next part, “you have been set free from sin”, isn’t talking about sin disappearing from our lives entirely, but about being liberated from its control and authority. Before salvation, sin was not just something we occasionally did; it was a power that dictated the direction of our hearts. To be “set free” is to have that power broken. This is more than behavior modification — it’s a transfer of ownership. We are no longer bound to follow the impulses of our sinful nature. We have been released from a cruel master.
Then Paul uses a phrase that, to modern ears, can sound jarring: “have become slaves of God.” Why would freedom from sin lead to slavery? It’s because there is no true neutrality in the spiritual life. We are always serving something or someone. Being “free” in the worldly sense — with no master — isn’t the reality Paul describes. Instead, we move from the bondage of sin into the joyful service of God. This is not a degrading slavery, but one marked by love, trust, and devotion. God’s “ownership” of us means protection, provision, and purpose. The more we yield to Him, the more we become the people we were created to be.
Paul then moves to the benefits of this divine relationship: “the benefit you reap leads to holiness.” Holiness isn’t a stiff, joyless perfectionism. It’s the beauty of becoming more like Christ in thought, word, and action. It’s a transformation that shapes us from the inside out, making us distinct from the world. Holiness is both the process (sanctification) and the goal — it is God shaping our character so that we reflect His glory. And this isn’t about human striving alone. The Spirit of God is at work in us, making holiness possible in ways we could never achieve on our own.
Finally, Paul points us to the ultimate result: “and the result is eternal life.” Eternal life is not just something that begins after death; it is the present possession of everyone who is in Christ. It’s the quality of life that comes from being in relationship with God — a life marked by peace, joy, and purpose — that extends into forever. The holiness we experience now is a foretaste of the eternal life we will enjoy in full when we are with God in glory.

What makes this verse so life-enriching is how it links past, present, and future. It tells us where we’ve come from — bondage to sin. It tells us where we are now — under the loving authority of God. And it tells us where we’re going — toward holiness and eternal life. This perspective keeps us grounded when we face temptations or discouragements. It reminds us that the Christian life is not about rules for the sake of rules, but about a relationship that transforms us and leads us into abundant life.
It also challenges us to ask hard but necessary questions: If I have been set free from sin, am I living like it? Have I truly yielded myself to God as my Master? Do I see holiness as a blessing or as a burden? Do I live with the joy and assurance that eternal life is already mine? These are not questions meant to condemn, but to draw us deeper into the truth that Paul is celebrating here.
The call of Romans 6:22 is both an invitation and a declaration. It’s an invitation to live in the freedom Christ has purchased for us and to embrace the identity of being God’s servant. It’s a declaration that such a life is not empty but overflowing with blessing — blessing in the form of holiness now and eternal life to come. This is not about what we can accomplish by sheer willpower; it’s about surrendering daily to the One who has set us free, trusting Him to shape us into people who reflect His glory and live in the fullness of His promises.
If we meditate on this verse long enough, we begin to realize it’s not just a statement of fact; it’s a call to action. Freedom from sin is not the end of the story — it’s the beginning of a life of joyful obedience, a journey of holiness, and the anticipation of eternal life that will never end.

A prominent verse related to generational stewardship of money is Proverbs 13:22, which states, "A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children."
This verse suggests that part of being a good steward of wealth includes planning for the future and ensuring the well-being of future generations of kingdom builders.
This verse is often cited in discussions about financial planning and legacy, it's important to remember that the Bible also emphasizes the importance of giving to those in need and being content with what one has, rather than accumulating wealth for its own sake.
The focus should be on using resources wisely and for God's glory first and foremost, NOT simply leaving a large sum of generational money.
My mission is to serve followers of Christ through helping them become builders of His kingdom. Trading is NOT a get rich scheme, rather it's a skillset that when applied from the perspective of stewarding God's wealth and will first, proves to be incredibly fulfilling!
