Freedom Flows Through Forgiveness ... Unpacking the Message of Matthew 6:12

Greetings,

Freedom Flows Through Forgiveness 💧

Jesus taught us to pray, “And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.”

Matthew 6:12

Matthew 6:12

Unpacking the Message of Matthew 6:12

When Jesus spoke the words, “And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors,” He was giving us one of the most challenging and transformative lessons in the entire Lord’s Prayer. These few words hold a divine mystery — a truth that connects the forgiveness we receive from God with the forgiveness we extend to others. To truly understand this verse, we have to see forgiveness not as a single act, but as a way of life — a rhythm of grace flowing from heaven into our hearts and out into the world.

Jesus was teaching that forgiveness is the key to freedom — both spiritual and emotional. When we hold onto unforgiveness, when we cling to resentment, anger, or bitterness, we are the ones imprisoned by it. The debts others owe us become chains we drag through our days. But when we choose to forgive — even when it’s hard, even when it feels undeserved — we align our hearts with the mercy of God. Forgiveness is not saying what someone did was right; it’s saying, “I will no longer let this wrong rule over me.”

In this prayer, Jesus is showing us that our relationship with God and our relationships with others are deeply intertwined. To ask God to forgive us, while withholding forgiveness from someone else, creates a contradiction in our hearts. It’s like asking for clean water while pouring poison into the well. Forgiveness from God flows freely — but it’s meant to flow through us, not just to us. That’s why Jesus connects the two: “Forgive us as we forgive.” He’s inviting us to experience His grace by extending it.

Forgiveness also requires humility. It’s a recognition that we, too, have debts — that we, too, have fallen short. We all stand in need of mercy. When we forget that, pride takes root and blinds us to our own need for grace. But when we live with the awareness of our own forgiven state, we find it much easier to forgive others. The ground at the foot of the cross is level — no one stands higher, no one lower. We all come as sinners in need of a Savior.

It’s important to understand that forgiveness doesn’t always mean reconciliation or restored relationship. There are situations where trust must be rebuilt slowly or where healthy boundaries are necessary. But forgiveness is a decision of the heart — a spiritual release. It’s saying, “God, I give this person to You. I let go of my right to revenge. I trust You to deal justly.” That moment of surrender brings peace. It lifts the weight we were never meant to carry.

Forgiveness is also an act of faith. When you forgive, you’re saying, “I trust God more than I trust my pain.” You’re allowing Him to be your defender, your healer, and your vindicator. You’re declaring that His justice and His timing are perfect — even when yours are not. And in doing so, you make space for His healing to enter places of your heart that bitterness has occupied.

This verse also teaches us to pray with awareness of our own daily need for forgiveness. Just as we ask for daily bread, we must ask for daily grace. Every day, we stumble in thought, word, or deed — and every day, God’s mercy meets us anew. By regularly confessing our debts to Him, we stay close to His heart. We remain humble, dependent, and tender toward others. That continual awareness of grace softens us and shapes our responses. It transforms our reactions from anger to compassion, from pride to patience.

The beauty of Jesus’ words is that they point to the very heart of the gospel. Forgiveness is not earned — it’s given. The cross was the ultimate act of forgiveness. When Jesus said, “Father, forgive them,” as He hung in pain, He was revealing the depth of God’s love for humanity — a love that forgives even before it is asked. When we forgive, we echo that same love. We become reflections of His nature, walking testimonies of His mercy.

Living out this verse takes practice and prayer. It means asking the Holy Spirit to help us see others the way God sees them — not as enemies or offenders, but as souls in need of grace. It means remembering how much we’ve been forgiven and letting that gratitude wash away bitterness. It means choosing mercy over memory, peace over pride, and compassion over condemnation.

If you’re struggling to forgive, start by praying for the person who wronged you. It might not feel sincere at first, but prayer opens the door for God to work in your heart. Over time, what begins as obedience becomes genuine compassion. The very act of praying for someone who hurt you is a reflection of divine love at work — because that’s not something human strength can do alone.

Ultimately, “And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors” is a daily invitation — an opportunity to walk in freedom, peace, and grace. When we live this way, our hearts become lighter, our relationships stronger, and our witness to the world clearer. People begin to see Jesus not just in our words, but in the way we extend grace to others.

So today, ask yourself — where might God be calling you to forgive? What debts are you still holding onto that keep you from the fullness of peace? Remember, forgiveness is not about forgetting the past — it’s about releasing its grip on your future. When you choose to forgive, you are choosing life, healing, and the very heart of God.

May we all learn to pray these words with sincerity — not as a ritual, but as a way of living: “And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.” In that simple yet profound exchange, we find the freedom that only Jesus can give — the freedom of a heart made new by mercy.

A prominent verse related to generational stewardship of money is Proverbs 13:22, which states, "A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children."

This verse suggests that part of being a good steward of wealth includes planning for the future and ensuring the well-being of future generations of kingdom builders.

This verse is often cited in discussions about financial planning and legacy, it's important to remember that the Bible also emphasizes the importance of giving to those in need and being content with what one has, rather than accumulating wealth for its own sake.

The focus should be on using resources wisely and for God's glory first and foremost, NOT simply leaving a large sum of generational money.

My mission is to serve followers of Christ through helping them become builders of His kingdom. Trading is NOT a get rich scheme, rather it's a skillset that when applied from the perspective of stewarding God's wealth and will first, proves to be incredibly fulfilling!

Here’s our 7-day journaling plan designed to help you live out the heart of Jesus’ words:

“And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.” — Matthew 6:12

Each day invites you to reflect, release, and receive God’s forgiveness and peace — allowing His grace to flow freely through you...

🌅 Daily Opening Prayer – Before Journaling

“Heavenly Father, As I come before You today, quiet my heart and open my spirit to Your truth. Help me to see my need for Your mercy and to extend that same mercy to others. Let this time in Your presence soften my heart, renew my thoughts, and draw me closer to the forgiving love of Jesus. In His precious name I pray, Amen.

Day 1 — Receiving God’s Forgiveness

Focus: Begin by reflecting on what it truly means to be forgiven by God.

Prompt: What sins, regrets, or mistakes do you need to bring before the Lord today? Write them out honestly, then thank Him for His mercy and the freedom that comes with being forgiven.

Reflection Verse: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” — 1 John 1:9

Day 2 — Remembering the Cost of Grace

Focus: The forgiveness we receive came at a great price — the blood of Christ.

Prompt: Spend time meditating on the cross. What does Jesus’ sacrifice mean to you personally? How does remembering that price change the way you view forgiveness?

Reflection Verse: “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” — Romans 5:8

Day 3 — Facing the Wounds

Focus: Forgiveness begins with honesty about the pain.

Prompt: Who has hurt or wronged you, and what pain are you still carrying? Write it down before God — not to dwell on it, but to bring it into His light. What emotions rise up as you do? Invite the Holy Spirit to begin healing that wound.

Reflection Verse: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18

Day 4 — Choosing to Forgive

Focus: Forgiveness is not a feeling — it’s a choice made in obedience and trust.

Prompt: Is there someone you need to forgive today? Write a prayer releasing them into God’s hands. Ask the Lord to fill the space in your heart where bitterness once lived with His peace.

Reflection Verse: “Bear with each other and forgive one another... Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” — Colossians 3:13

Day 5 — Living in Freedom

Focus: Forgiveness sets you free.

Prompt: How has unforgiveness held you back — emotionally, spiritually, or relationally? Reflect on how your life could feel different when you fully release that burden.

Reflection Verse: “Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” — 2 Corinthians 3:17

Day 6 — Extending Grace Daily

Focus: Forgiveness is a daily practice, not a one-time event.

Prompt: Think about how you respond when others offend or disappoint you. How can you bring grace into your daily interactions — at home, work, or church? What small change can you make today to reflect God’s mercy?

Reflection Verse: “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” — Ephesians 4:32

Day 7 — Living as a Vessel of Mercy

Focus: You are a carrier of God’s forgiveness to a hurting world.

Prompt: Reflect on how your story of forgiveness — both received and given — can encourage others. How can you become a messenger of God’s grace this week?

Reflection Verse: “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.” — Matthew 5:7

🌄 Daily Closing Prayer – After Journaling

“Gracious Lord, Thank You for meeting me here and for the peace that flows from Your forgiveness. Help me carry this spirit of grace into my relationships and choices today. Teach me to forgive as You have forgiven me, and let Your love heal every hidden place in my heart. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Closing thoughts as we pray for those reading or hearing this verse today...

Dear Beloved in Christ,

Freedom Flows Through Forgiveness 💧

Jesus taught us to pray, “And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.”

— Matthew 6:12

Forgiveness is one of the most powerful acts of faith we can practice. It’s not just about setting someone else free — it’s about freeing our own hearts from the weight of bitterness and resentment. When we release others, we make room for God’s peace to fill the spaces where pain once lived.

It’s easy to ask for forgiveness from God — and praise Him, He gives it freely! But He also invites us to become conduits of that same grace. Each time we forgive, we reflect His mercy, we heal a little more, and we become living examples of His love in motion.

Today, ask the Lord to help you let go — not because they deserve it, but because you’ve been forgiven much. Freedom flows when forgiveness does.

Grace and peace 🙏🏻
