Greetings,
Finding Strength in Waiting on the Lord
"I say to myself, ‘The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.’" — Lamentations 3:24
Unpacking the Message of Lamentations 3:24
Let us take some time to really sit with the words of Lamentations 3:24: “I say to myself, ‘The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.’” This verse is both deeply personal and powerfully instructive. It is spoken in the midst of lament, in a book filled with sorrow, grief, and acknowledgment of suffering. Yet right in the middle of all that pain, the writer reminds himself—and us—that God is enough.
One of the first truths we can draw from this verse is the intentional act of speaking to oneself. The writer doesn’t just know the truth in his mind; he declares it aloud, reminding his own soul where to find peace and security. Sometimes our circumstances scream louder than our faith, and it takes a deliberate choice to speak truth over ourselves. When we wake up anxious, overwhelmed, or uncertain, we too can say, “The Lord is my portion.” It becomes a declaration that reshapes our thoughts and aligns our hearts with God’s promises.
The word “portion” here is rich with meaning. In the Old Testament, a portion often referred to an inheritance, something of great value that provided security for the future. To say “the Lord is my portion” is to claim God Himself as your inheritance, your sufficiency, and your ultimate treasure. It means He is not just the giver of blessings but the blessing itself. When we make God our portion, we acknowledge that no material possession, achievement, or earthly relationship could ever satisfy us the way His presence does. This reframes how we see life, because suddenly, our worth and fulfillment are not tied to what we have, but to Whom we belong.
The second half of the verse emphasizes waiting. “Therefore I will wait for him.” Waiting is one of the hardest disciplines for us as human beings. We live in a culture of instant gratification, where everything is about speed and convenience. Yet God often asks us to wait—not because He is delaying to frustrate us, but because waiting builds trust, deepens faith, and teaches us to lean on His timing rather than our own. Waiting doesn’t mean passivity; it means actively trusting, serving, and living in faith while expecting God to move. It’s choosing to be patient, believing that His plan is far greater than anything we could rush into on our own.
This verse also invites us to consider what it looks like to truly rest in God as our portion during seasons of waiting. If He is enough, then waiting becomes less about what we lack and more about who He is. The waiting is filled with hope rather than despair, with assurance rather than fear. We can wait with peace because our hearts are anchored in the truth that God has already given us Himself.

There’s also something here about identity. When the writer says, “The Lord is my portion,” he isn’t just making a statement about God’s character—he’s making a statement about who he is in relation to God. It’s an identity rooted in belonging. When you know God is your portion, you no longer need to compare your life to others or measure your worth by external standards. You are grounded in the reality that you belong to Him, and He is more than enough for you.
Another key lesson from this verse is the importance of speaking hope into despair. Lamentations is filled with grief, but in the midst of that grief, the writer plants this seed of faith. It shows us that even when everything around us feels broken, we can still declare the goodness and sufficiency of God. It teaches us that our circumstances do not define God’s faithfulness, and our suffering does not erase His presence. In fact, it is often in those dark seasons that His sufficiency shines brightest.
As we reflect on this verse, we can think of practical ways to live it out. Perhaps it looks like beginning each day with this declaration: “The Lord is my portion.” Perhaps it looks like reminding ourselves to trust His timing when impatience creeps in. Perhaps it means learning to be content in His presence rather than always striving for more. This verse challenges us to reframe our daily lives, to slow down enough to recognize that what we have in Him surpasses anything the world could offer.
Finally, there is a future-oriented hope in this passage. If God is our portion, then our inheritance is eternal. Earthly treasures may fade, opportunities may vanish, and relationships may change, but God remains constant. To say He is our portion is to stake our claim on an eternal reality that cannot be shaken. That truth gives us courage to endure trials, peace to wait through uncertainty, and joy to keep pressing forward in faith.
In short, Lamentations 3:24 is a reminder of sufficiency, identity, trust, and hope. It is an invitation to pause, speak truth over ourselves, and choose patience in a hurried world. It calls us to re-anchor our lives in God, to trust that He is enough, and to remember that His timing is perfect. When we embrace this verse daily, we begin to live from a place of contentment, strength, and unshakable faith.

A prominent verse related to generational stewardship of money is Proverbs 13:22, which states, "A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children."
This verse suggests that part of being a good steward of wealth includes planning for the future and ensuring the well-being of future generations of kingdom builders.
This verse is often cited in discussions about financial planning and legacy, it's important to remember that the Bible also emphasizes the importance of giving to those in need and being content with what one has, rather than accumulating wealth for its own sake.
The focus should be on using resources wisely and for God's glory first and foremost, NOT simply leaving a large sum of generational money.
My mission is to serve followers of Christ through helping them become builders of His kingdom. Trading is NOT a get rich scheme, rather it's a skillset that when applied from the perspective of stewarding God's wealth and will first, proves to be incredibly fulfilling!

Here’s our 7-day journaling plan built around Lamentations 3:24 — “I say to myself, ‘The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.’”. Each day invites reflection, prayer, and practical application to deepen your walk with God.
Day 1 – Speaking to Yourself
Reflect on why the writer begins with “I say to myself.” Write about the power of speaking God’s truth into your own heart, especially when circumstances seem overwhelming. Where in your life do you need to remind yourself that God is faithful?
Day 2 – What Does “Portion” Mean to You?
Journal about the word “portion.” In the Old Testament, it meant inheritance and sustenance. How does it change your perspective to think of the Lord Himself as your portion? Write about ways you can shift your focus from what God gives to who He is.
Day 3 – Releasing False Security
Think about where you’ve been placing your security—career, finances, approval, relationships, or control. Journal honestly about these areas. How can you surrender them to God and rest in the truth that He alone is your portion?
Day 4 – Waiting on God’s Timing
Waiting is often uncomfortable. Reflect on something you’re waiting for in your life right now. Journal about what makes the waiting hard. Then write a prayer asking God to help you trust His timing and see waiting as an act of faith, not frustration.
Day 5 – Hope in Hardship
The book of Lamentations is filled with sorrow, yet this verse shines with hope. Journal about a season in your life when you’ve seen God’s faithfulness even in hardship. How can this memory strengthen your faith today?
Day 6 – Identity in Belonging
Write about how this verse speaks to your identity. If the Lord is your portion, then your worth and security are not tied to achievements or possessions. Journal about what it looks like to root your identity in Him, not in comparison with others.
Day 7 – Living It Out
Bring the week together by journaling about how you can live out this verse daily. What practical habits can help you declare, “The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him” each day? End with a written prayer of commitment to trust Him fully.

Closing thoughts as we pray for those reading or hearing this verse today...
Dear Beloved in Christ,
Finding Strength in Waiting on the Lord
Scripture reminds us of a powerful truth:
"I say to myself, ‘The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.’" — Lamentations 3:24
In a world that tells us to chase after more—more success, more possessions, more recognition—this verse redirects our hearts to the sufficiency of God Himself.
He is our portion. He is enough. When we learn to rest in Him, we find peace that the world cannot offer and strength that does not run dry.
Waiting on the Lord isn’t wasted time—it’s an act of faith, a declaration that we trust His perfect timing and provision. Whatever you’re facing today, remind yourself that He is your portion. He has not forgotten you, and His promises never fail.
Stand firm in that hope and let His presence be your daily portion.
With faith and encouragement 🙏🏻
