Greetings,
The Secret to Truly Finding Life
“For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.” — Matthew 16:25
Unpacking the Message of Matthew 16:25
This verse is one of those statements from Jesus that turns the logic of the world upside down. On the surface, it almost seems contradictory. How could losing your life actually mean finding it? Yet, in this paradox lies one of the greatest truths of the gospel and one of the deepest invitations Jesus gives us.
The world teaches us from the very beginning to hold on to life at all costs. We’re told to preserve our comforts, protect our possessions, and secure our reputation. Society constantly whispers that the goal is to build our lives bigger, better, and stronger—to save them, in a sense. And yet, Jesus tells us plainly that if we live this way, if we cling so tightly to our own will, our own plans, and our own sense of control, we will end up losing the very thing we are trying so desperately to protect. It is as though Jesus is warning us that what we grasp tightly eventually slips through our fingers, because the only way to truly hold on to life is to release it into His hands.
When Jesus speaks of losing our life for His sake, He isn’t just talking about physical death, though in some cases, that is the ultimate expression of faith. He’s speaking about daily surrender. Every single day, we are faced with choices that reveal whether we are trying to “save our life” on our own terms or “lose it” for Him. It may look like laying aside selfish ambition in order to love someone sacrificially. It may look like releasing anger and forgiving when every part of us wants to hold on to resentment. It may look like giving up control of the future we had planned, trusting instead in the path God is leading us down.
There’s a deep irony in this verse. When we fight to preserve our lives, we often lose the very joy and peace that life is supposed to carry. For example, someone who is obsessed with success may achieve their goals but end up exhausted, lonely, and spiritually empty. In their attempt to “save” their life through achievement, they discover they’ve actually lost it. On the other hand, when a person surrenders their ambitions and says, “Lord, whatever you want from me, I’ll follow,” they often discover a life full of meaning, peace, and joy beyond what they could have orchestrated on their own. In losing, they find.
Think about how this principle is reflected in the life of Jesus Himself. He surrendered everything. He did not cling to His divine privilege but humbled Himself, became a servant, and laid down His life. From a worldly perspective, the cross looked like the ultimate loss. Yet through His death, He brought resurrection, redemption, and eternal life. What seemed like defeat became the greatest victory in history. And He calls us to follow that same path of surrender, reminding us that it is only in dying to ourselves that we can truly live.
This verse also challenges our definition of “life.” The world tells us that life is about experiences, wealth, success, and comfort. But Jesus is pointing us to something greater—eternal life. To lose your life for Him is to exchange temporary pursuits for eternal rewards. It is to look beyond what is fleeting and fix your eyes on what will last forever. When we cling too tightly to earthly life, we risk missing out on the fullness of eternal life that Christ offers.

Now, how does this truth apply to our everyday lives? Perhaps you are holding on tightly to fear—fear of failure, fear of the unknown, fear of what will happen if you let go of control. Jesus is inviting you to release that fear, to lose it in His presence, and to discover peace that surpasses understanding. Maybe you are clinging to an identity built on accomplishments, possessions, or the approval of others. Jesus is reminding you that your true identity is found in Him alone, and when you release that striving, you will finally find who you were created to be.
There’s also a very practical element here. Each day, we can ask ourselves, “Am I trying to save my life today, or am I surrendering it to Jesus?” If we approach our decisions with that mindset, it changes how we interact with people, how we respond to challenges, and how we face setbacks. For example, instead of seeing interruptions as obstacles, we can surrender them and see them as opportunities God may be using to shape us. Instead of clinging to bitterness when someone wrongs us, we can release it and discover the freedom of forgiveness.
Ultimately, this verse is not a call to despair but a call to true freedom. The irony is that the more tightly we cling to our own will, the more enslaved we become. The more we release it to Christ, the more we discover what freedom really feels like. Jesus is not asking us to lose our lives in order to strip us of joy—He is asking us to lose them so He can give us a better, eternal, abundant life in exchange.
So, the question for each of us is this: What part of your life are you still trying to “save”? What are you clinging to that you need to release? Is it your plans? Your fears? Your reputation? Your control over circumstances? The invitation of Jesus in Matthew 16:25 is not just for a moment of surrender but for a lifetime of surrender, one day at a time, one choice at a time.
And when you live this way, you will discover that what Jesus promised is true. In losing, you find. In surrendering, you are set free. In laying down your life, you discover the life you were truly meant to live—life with Him, life for Him, life in Him.

A prominent verse related to generational stewardship of money is Proverbs 13:22, which states, "A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children."
This verse suggests that part of being a good steward of wealth includes planning for the future and ensuring the well-being of future generations of kingdom builders.
This verse is often cited in discussions about financial planning and legacy, it's important to remember that the Bible also emphasizes the importance of giving to those in need and being content with what one has, rather than accumulating wealth for its own sake.
The focus should be on using resources wisely and for God's glory first and foremost, NOT simply leaving a large sum of generational money.
My mission is to serve followers of Christ through helping them become builders of His kingdom. Trading is NOT a get rich scheme, rather it's a skillset that when applied from the perspective of stewarding God's wealth and will first, proves to be incredibly fulfilling!

Here’s our 7-day journaling plan built around Matthew 16:25 — “For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.”
Day 1 – The Paradox of Surrender
Focus: Reflect on why Jesus’ teaching feels upside down to the world’s way of thinking.
Prompt: Where in your life do you see yourself clinging tightly to control, security, or comfort? How might surrendering these to Jesus actually bring you freedom?
Day 2 – What Am I Holding On To?
Focus: Identify areas where you’re trying to “save” your life.
Prompt: Write about one area where you are striving to preserve your own way—your reputation, finances, relationships, or plans. How would releasing it to God look?
Day 3 – Losing Life Daily
Focus: Understand that surrender is not a one-time act but a daily choice.
Prompt: Describe one practical way you can “lose your life” for Christ today. It might be forgiving someone, serving without recognition, or trusting God with an unknown.
Day 4 – Learning from Jesus’ Example
Focus: Reflect on Jesus’ surrender at the cross.
Prompt: How does Jesus’ willingness to lay down His life inspire you? What does His example teach you about what it means to live for God’s glory and not your own?
Day 5 – Redefining Success
Focus: Contrast the world’s idea of saving life with Jesus’ idea of finding life.
Prompt: Write about how you usually measure success. Then consider how Jesus redefines success as faithfulness, surrender, and eternal purpose. What shifts in mindset do you need?
Day 6 – What Will You Gain?
Focus: Explore the reward of surrender.
Prompt: Jesus promises that losing your life for Him leads to finding true life. Journal about what that “true life” looks like for you. Where have you already tasted that abundant life in Christ?
Day 7 – A Personal Prayer of Surrender
Focus: End the week with personal commitment.
Prompt: Write a prayer of full surrender to God. Be specific about what you are releasing into His hands and express your trust that in losing, you will truly find life.

Closing thoughts as we pray for those reading or hearing this verse today...
Dear Beloved in Christ,
The Secret to Truly Finding Life
Jesus’ words cut straight to the heart of what it means to follow Him: “For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.” — Matthew 16:25
The world tells us to cling tightly to our plans, possessions, and control. Yet Christ teaches the opposite—that true life is not found in holding on, but in letting go.
It is in surrendering our desires and trusting Him that we discover freedom, peace, and the life we were always meant to live.
Today, be encouraged to loosen your grip and place everything in God’s hands.
As you do, you will see that losing your life for Christ is not loss at all—it is the doorway to eternal gain.
Press on in His strength 🙏🏻
