Not just hears it—sees it. That means your silent tears, your quiet surrender, your whispered confessions, and your moments of desperate faith are fully visible to Him. And He rewards that. Not always with material blessing, but with a deeper knowledge of Himself, a peace that surpasses understanding, guidance, healing, and the joy of closeness with Him. These are rewards the world cannot give—and often cannot understand.
What Jesus is confronting in this verse is the tendency of religious people to make spiritual acts about other people. In the verses just before this one (Matthew 6:5), He warns against being like the hypocrites who love to pray on street corners just to be seen. He’s not condemning public prayer; He’s confronting the desire to be impressive. When your prayer becomes about being noticed by people, it loses its purpose. But when your prayer becomes about being known by God, it fulfills its purpose.
This verse also calls us into a different pace of life. Private prayer takes time. It requires that you pause, that you disengage from your calendar, your to-do list, and your notifications. Journal Prompt: In what areas of my life do I feel the need to “perform” spiritually? What would it look like to drop those pretenses in prayer and just be real with God?

Journal Prompt: What would it look like for me to build a daily rhythm of secret-place prayer? What time, space, and routine would best foster my consistency?
