Striving for Goodness in Every Situation ... Unpacking 1 Thessalonians 5:15

Updated: Dec 17, 2024

Greetings,

Striving for Goodness in Every Situation

"Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always strive to do what is good for each other and for everyone else." — 1 Thessalonians 5:15

Unpacking 1 Thessalonians 5:15

1 Thessalonians 5:15, “Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always strive to do what is good for each other and for everyone else,” highlights a powerful principle of Christian ethics—responding to harm not with retaliation but with goodness. This verse reflects the transformative call of the Gospel to live counter to natural human inclinations, which often lean toward retribution.

The instruction to “make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong” challenges the believer to reject the cycle of vengeance. Retaliation may feel justifiable or even instinctive when wronged, but it perpetuates hostility and division. By contrast, refraining from vengeance and choosing peace breaks this cycle, reflecting the grace and mercy of God. This teaching aligns with Jesus’ words in Matthew 5:44, where He commands His followers to love their enemies and pray for those who persecute them.

The Christian response to wrongdoing is not about matching the offense but about demonstrating a higher standard rooted in God’s love.

The second part of the verse, “always strive to do what is good for each other and for everyone else,” broadens the scope of ethical responsibility. “Strive” implies an active and continuous effort. Doing good is not a passive act but a deliberate and intentional pursuit. This applies not only to those within the Christian community (“each other”) but extends to all people (“everyone else”), reflecting the universal nature of God’s love and the believer’s calling to be a light in the world.

This principle of doing good also emphasizes the power of positive action. Choosing to respond with goodness instead of retaliation not only disarms hostility but also has the potential to transform relationships and circumstances. Proverbs 25:21–22 echoes this sentiment, suggesting that responding to an enemy with kindness can turn their heart and lead to reconciliation.

On a practical level, this verse invites self-reflection: How do we respond when wronged? Are we quick to retaliate, or do we seek ways to bless and uplift even in difficult situations? It challenges us to consider how our actions impact others and whether they reflect the character of Christ. To “strive to do what is good” may require humility, forgiveness, and self-control—qualities that can only flourish through the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

This teaching also has communal implications. A community that embodies this principle—rejecting vengeance and pursuing the good of all—becomes a powerful witness to the world. Such a community demonstrates the redemptive power of God’s love, fostering peace and unity even in the face of conflict.

At its core, this verse points to the example of Jesus Christ. On the cross, Jesus bore the ultimate wrong and yet did not retaliate. Instead, He prayed for His persecutors, offering forgiveness and salvation. His sacrificial love is the model for believers, showing that choosing goodness over vengeance is not weakness but strength rooted in divine grace.

Closing thoughts as I pray for those reading or hearing this verse today...

The call to “do what is good” reminds us of the broader mission of the Christian life: to reflect God’s kingdom values in a broken world.

This requires not only avoiding harm but actively seeking to build up others, promote justice, and extend kindness.

It is a call to live with purpose and intentionality, demonstrating through our actions the hope and love of Christ.

It’s tempting to react to hurt with hurt or to let resentment guide our actions.

As followers of Christ, we are called to rise above retaliation and pursue goodness instead.

When we repay wrongs with grace and extend kindness even in difficult circumstances, we reflect the character of Jesus.

This is not always easy, but with God’s strength, it is possible.

Today, let’s focus on seeking the good of others, even when it’s undeserved.

In doing so, we shine His love into a world that desperately needs it!
