Greetings,
Guarding Our Words and Guarding Our Lives
Scripture offers us timeless wisdom in Proverbs 13:3 - “Those who guard their lips preserve their lives, but those who speak rashly will come to ruin.”
Unpacking the Message of Proverbs 13:3
Proverbs 13:3 says, “Those who guard their lips preserve their lives, but those who speak rashly will come to ruin.” At first glance, it seems like a simple piece of wisdom about controlling one’s speech, but when you dig deeper, you discover that this proverb speaks to one of the most powerful forces in our lives—our words. Words are not neutral. They have weight, influence, and consequence. They can heal, bless, guide, and encourage, but they can also wound, divide, destroy, and lead to regret. Solomon, the writer of Proverbs, understood this truth, and he presents it as a matter of life and ruin. The way we use our lips has the power to preserve us or to bring us down.
To “guard” one’s lips means to approach speech with wisdom, caution, and discernment. It is not about remaining silent all the time, but about being mindful of when to speak, how to speak, and what to speak. A guarded tongue reflects a heart that has been trained in patience and humility. It shows an awareness that words, once spoken, cannot be taken back. Think of how many conflicts in life, whether in marriages, friendships, or workplaces, escalate not because of actions but because of rash words. One heated outburst, one careless insult, one rash comment can create divisions that take years to heal—or may never heal at all.
On the other hand, a person who learns to guard their lips preserves peace, relationships, and even their own reputation. They learn to step back, think, and allow wisdom to shape their response. Guarding our speech does not mean bottling everything up inside but choosing the right time and the right manner to express ourselves. Sometimes silence is the most powerful response, not because it avoids the truth, but because it avoids needless harm. Scripture reminds us in James that the tongue is like a small spark that can set a whole forest ablaze. Proverbs 13:3 gives us the antidote to that danger—guard your lips, and you preserve your life.
Now, consider the contrast: “those who speak rashly will come to ruin.” Rash words are words spoken without thought, without patience, and often without love. They are impulsive, reactive, and careless. They may feel justified in the moment, but they often lead to regret. Rash words can destroy trust, damage opportunities, and even harm our witness as followers of Christ. They reveal a lack of self-control, and Proverbs teaches elsewhere that a person without self-control is like a city with broken walls—open to ruin. Rash speech exposes us to unnecessary conflict, broken relationships, and even spiritual consequences.
If you reflect on your own life, you can likely remember a moment where rash words cost you something—a friendship strained, a family member hurt, or a situation made worse by what you said rather than what you did. You can probably also remember times when holding your tongue preserved peace and gave God room to work in the situation. That is the wisdom of this verse in action. Guarding your lips preserves your life because it prevents the destructive consequences of careless words.

There is also a deeper spiritual truth here. Our words reveal the condition of our hearts. Jesus taught that out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. If our words are rash, harsh, or careless, they reveal something unsettled within us. If our words are thoughtful, gentle, and edifying, they reveal a heart being shaped by the Spirit. Guarding our lips, then, is not only about external discipline but about internal transformation. It requires us to invite God to change our hearts so that our speech flows from a place of love, humility, and self-control.
Guarded lips also preserve our witness as followers of Christ. The world is watching how Christians speak—do we respond with anger, gossip, criticism, or bitterness, or do we respond with wisdom, patience, and grace? Rash words can damage our credibility and hinder our ability to share the gospel. But words that are guarded and gracious reflect the character of Christ and open doors for ministry. The Apostle Paul encourages us to let our speech always be seasoned with salt, giving grace to those who hear. That aligns perfectly with the wisdom of Proverbs 13:3.
On a practical level, this verse invites us to slow down. In a world where communication is instant—text messages, social media, emails—it is easy to speak rashly because the pressure to respond quickly is so great. But wisdom says it is better to pause and consider before responding. A moment of reflection can prevent years of regret. Guarding your lips may mean deleting that angry text before sending it, choosing not to comment on social media in the heat of the moment, or simply saying, “Let me think about that” before answering a difficult question.
The preservation promised in this verse is holistic. It preserves your relationships by avoiding unnecessary hurt. It preserves your peace by keeping you from constant conflict. It preserves your integrity by showing that you are a person of wisdom and restraint. And it preserves your spiritual life by aligning your speech with God’s heart. In contrast, rash words can unravel all of these things in a matter of moments.
At its core, Proverbs 13:3 is a call to maturity. Children speak without thought, often blurting out whatever comes to mind. But as we grow in wisdom and in Christ, we learn the discipline of measured speech. We learn that sometimes less is more, and that restraint is a form of strength. True power is not found in the loudest or quickest words but in words spoken with wisdom, timing, and grace.
Ultimately, this verse points us back to the need for God’s help. Guarding our lips is not easy, especially when emotions run high. But with the Holy Spirit’s guidance, we can learn to pause, to think, and to let our words be a reflection of Christ’s love. In doing so, we preserve not only our lives but also the lives of those around us. Words can bring ruin, but they can also bring life—and choosing to guard our lips ensures that our words build up rather than tear down.

A prominent verse related to generational stewardship of money is Proverbs 13:22, which states, "A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children."
This verse suggests that part of being a good steward of wealth includes planning for the future and ensuring the well-being of future generations of kingdom builders.
This verse is often cited in discussions about financial planning and legacy, it's important to remember that the Bible also emphasizes the importance of giving to those in need and being content with what one has, rather than accumulating wealth for its own sake.
The focus should be on using resources wisely and for God's glory first and foremost, NOT simply leaving a large sum of generational money.
My mission is to serve followers of Christ through helping them become builders of His kingdom. Trading is NOT a get rich scheme, rather it's a skillset that when applied from the perspective of stewarding God's wealth and will first, proves to be incredibly fulfilling!
