Greetings,
A Call to Self-Examination
"Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you—unless, of course, you fail the test?" — 2 Corinthians 13:5
Unpacking the Message of Verse 2 Corinthians 13:5
2 Corinthians 13:5 is a powerful and sobering verse that calls believers to self-examination. Paul urges the Corinthians to test themselves to determine if they are truly in the faith, reminding them that Christ Jesus is in them—unless they fail the test. This verse is significant because it emphasizes the importance of personal accountability in one's spiritual journey, rather than relying on external signs or associations.
Self-examination is a crucial practice for believers. It is easy to assume faith based on church attendance, good works, or a family background in Christianity, but Paul challenges us to go deeper. True faith is not just about outward appearances; it is about an inward transformation by the presence of Christ. This means evaluating our hearts, our motives, and our obedience to God's Word. Are we living in alignment with Christ’s teachings? Do our actions reflect our professed faith? These are critical questions to ask ourselves.
Testing ourselves does not mean doubting our salvation but rather confirming it. In the same way that a student takes tests to ensure they understand the material, believers are called to assess their spiritual condition. This involves looking at the fruit of our lives, as Jesus taught in Matthew 7:16: "By their fruit, you will recognize them." If we see the fruit of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23)—it is evidence that Christ is working in us. If, however, our lives are marked by persistent sin, lack of repentance, or a hardened heart toward God, it may indicate that we need to return to Him in true faith.

Paul’s words also remind us that Christ is in us. This is a profound reality. When we place our faith in Jesus, we are not just following a set of beliefs; we are indwelt by the Holy Spirit. Romans 8:10 affirms, "But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness." The presence of Christ should bring transformation, leading us to desire holiness, humility, and a closer relationship with God.
Another key aspect of this verse is the warning: "Unless, of course, you fail the test." This statement is not meant to create fear but to encourage serious reflection. The Bible warns against complacency and self-deception. James 1:22 cautions, "Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says." It is possible to be around Christian teachings, engage in religious activities, and still not have a genuine, saving relationship with Christ. Jesus Himself warned in Matthew 7:21-23 that not everyone who calls Him "Lord" will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only those who do the will of the Father.
Practical self-examination can take several forms. One way is through prayer, asking God to search our hearts as David did in Psalm 139:23-24: "Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting." Regularly reading and meditating on Scripture helps us align our thoughts and actions with God's truth. Accountability with other believers can also provide insight, as Proverbs 27:17 states, "As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another."
True faith results in transformation. It is not a one-time decision but a daily walk with Christ. Self-examination should not lead to discouragement but to a deeper dependence on God’s grace. When we find areas where we fall short, we do not need to despair but rather turn to Christ, who forgives, restores, and strengthens us. 1 John 1:9 assures us, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness."
Ultimately, 2 Corinthians 13:5 calls us to a living, active faith. It challenges us to move beyond superficial Christianity and into a genuine, personal relationship with Jesus. By continually examining ourselves in light of Scripture, seeking the Holy Spirit’s guidance, and living out our faith with sincerity, we grow in maturity and assurance of our salvation. Christ’s presence in us is the greatest evidence of our faith, and as we abide in Him, He will shape us into His image, preparing us for eternal life with Him.
