Greetings,
A Call to Lead with Love and Faith
"Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord." — Ephesians 6:4
Unpacking the Message of Ephesians 6:4
Let’s take some time to really dwell on Ephesians 6:4: “Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.” At first glance, this verse might feel like a simple parenting directive, but if we press into it, we find it carries layers of truth about God’s heart for family, authority, and the spiritual growth of the next generation.
One of the first things we notice here is the word “fathers.” Paul could have written “parents” in general, but he deliberately calls out fathers, the spiritual leaders of the home. In the culture of the time, fathers carried not only authority but also responsibility for the moral and spiritual direction of the household. Paul is not stripping mothers of their critical role, but he is reminding fathers not to abdicate their God-given responsibility. In our modern world, we often see fathers either disengage completely or swing to the other extreme—using heavy-handed authority without compassion. Scripture warns against both. God doesn’t want fathers to provoke anger, bitterness, or discouragement in their children. Instead, He calls them to nurture, to shepherd, to guide.
The phrase “do not exasperate” is key here. To exasperate means to frustrate, to push someone to the point of discouragement, or to place demands on them without offering love, grace, or understanding. Children who grow up under constant criticism or unrealistic expectations often internalize the belief that they are never enough. They carry those wounds into adulthood. But Paul gives us the antidote: raise them in the training and instruction of the Lord. This shows us that discipline in the home is not about control; it’s about discipleship. It’s not about making our children conform to our image, but about helping them grow into the image of Christ.
There’s a powerful implication here. The way we raise our children reflects how we view God Himself. If we are harsh, unrelenting, and critical, then we unintentionally give our children a distorted view of their heavenly Father. But if we show patience, mercy, and a commitment to truth, then we model for them the very heart of God. Training and instruction in the Lord does not mean only sitting down for a Bible lesson once in a while. It means living out our faith in front of them daily. It means letting them see us pray, letting them hear us apologize when we fail, letting them watch us forgive others, and letting them feel the consistency of our love even when discipline is necessary.
Another layer to reflect on is the balance between discipline and instruction. Training implies correction, boundaries, and teaching children to walk in righteousness. But instruction is about imparting wisdom, pointing them to God’s Word, and helping them discern truth from error. Both are essential. A home that emphasizes only discipline without instruction may raise children who obey rules outwardly but lack a heart transformation. A home that emphasizes only instruction without discipline may raise children who know the right words but lack the structure to live them out. God calls us to weave the two together so that faith is not only taught but embodied.

This verse also reminds us of the long-term vision of parenting. When Paul says “bring them up,” the phrase implies an ongoing process. Parenting is not a moment, but a journey. It requires consistency over years, with the understanding that every word, every correction, every hug, every prayer contributes to shaping a child’s heart. This means we cannot afford to parent aimlessly. Our ultimate goal is not just to raise well-behaved kids, but to raise disciples of Jesus Christ. That should reframe everything we do—from the way we discipline, to the conversations we have at the dinner table, to how we prioritize church and worship as a family.
And here’s where it becomes deeply personal. This verse doesn’t just apply to fathers biologically—it applies to anyone God has placed in a position of spiritual influence over the next generation. Maybe you’re a grandfather, an uncle, a mentor, a coach, or a spiritual parent in the church. You, too, are called to avoid discouraging young hearts and instead to invest in their spiritual growth. This verse is about legacy. What kind of faith are we passing on? What picture of God are we painting for the children in our lives?
Finally, there’s comfort here. Parenting—and by extension, discipleship—is overwhelming if we think it all depends on us. But notice, Paul does not call fathers to raise children in their own wisdom. He says, “the training and instruction of the Lord.” This means we are not expected to have all the answers. We are called to lean on God’s Word, God’s Spirit, and God’s example. When we abide in Christ, He equips us to parent in ways we never could on our own. The call is not to perfection but to dependence on Him.
So, as we meditate on this verse, we should ask ourselves: are we pointing the next generation to Christ, or are we unintentionally pushing them away through frustration and discouragement? Are we balancing discipline with grace? Are we modeling the love of the heavenly Father in how we guide, correct, and nurture? This verse is not just about children; it’s about showing the world what God is like through the way we love those entrusted to us.
If taken to heart, Ephesians 6:4 is both a challenge and an invitation. It challenges us to parent differently than the world does—not with anger, manipulation, or indifference, but with patience, grace, and truth. And it invites us to partner with God in raising up a generation that knows Him, trusts Him, and loves Him deeply.

A prominent verse related to generational stewardship of money is Proverbs 13:22, which states, "A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children."
This verse suggests that part of being a good steward of wealth includes planning for the future and ensuring the well-being of future generations of kingdom builders.
This verse is often cited in discussions about financial planning and legacy, it's important to remember that the Bible also emphasizes the importance of giving to those in need and being content with what one has, rather than accumulating wealth for its own sake.
The focus should be on using resources wisely and for God's glory first and foremost, NOT simply leaving a large sum of generational money.
My mission is to serve followers of Christ through helping them become builders of His kingdom. Trading is NOT a get rich scheme, rather it's a skillset that when applied from the perspective of stewarding God's wealth and will first, proves to be incredibly fulfilling!

Here’s our 7-day journaling plan built around Ephesians 6:4 — “Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.”
Each day focuses on a different aspect of the verse and includes reflection prompts to guide prayer and application...
Day 1 – God’s Design for Family Leadership
Focus: Reflect on why Paul specifically calls out fathers.
Prompt: How do I view the role of a father or spiritual leader in the family? Where do I see myself stepping into (or resisting) this role in my life, family, or community?
Day 2 – Avoiding Exasperation
Focus: What does it mean to “not exasperate” children?
Prompt: Have I ever pushed someone (child, spouse, or friend) toward frustration rather than encouragement? What changes could I make to communicate with patience and grace?
Day 3 – Training in the Lord
Focus: Training is discipline with purpose.
Prompt: In what ways can I set healthy boundaries or guide others toward godliness in my home or relationships? How is God training me right now?
Day 4 – Instruction in the Lord
Focus: Instruction is imparting wisdom through God’s Word.
Prompt: How often do I let Scripture be the foundation of my conversations with my children, family, or those I mentor? What is one way I can bring God’s Word into my home this week?
Day 5 – Modeling God’s Character
Focus: Children learn not just by what we say, but by what we live.
Prompt: Do my actions reflect the patience, mercy, and love of my heavenly Father? In what areas of my life do I need God’s Spirit to transform me so others see Him in me?
Day 6 – Parenting as Discipleship
Focus: Parenting is about discipleship, not just behavior management.
Prompt: Am I more concerned with outward behavior or the inward heart of those I influence? How can I shift my focus to guiding hearts toward Jesus rather than controlling actions?
Day 7 – Legacy and Dependence on God
Focus: Leaving a spiritual legacy and relying on God’s wisdom.
Prompt: What kind of spiritual legacy am I leaving for the next generation? Where do I need to trust God more deeply as I guide others in His ways? Write a prayer dedicating your role as a parent, mentor, or leader back to Him.

Closing thoughts as we pray for those reading or hearing this verse today...
Dear Beloved in Christ,
A Call to Lead with Love and Faith
God’s Word reminds us of the sacred role parents hold:
"Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord." — Ephesians 6:4
This verse is more than guidance—it’s a call to shepherd the hearts of our children with patience, tenderness, and faith.
Our influence is not only in what we say but in how we live.
Every moment spent showing grace, modeling humility, and pointing them to Jesus lays an eternal foundation in their hearts.
Parenting is not always easy, but God has given us His Spirit to strengthen us.
Today, let us seek His wisdom and ask for hearts that lead with love, so our children may grow to know the Lord deeply and walk in His ways.
May your home be a place where faith is lived out daily and God’s love is unmistakably present.
In Christ’s love 🙏🏻
